Safety First: The Non-Negotiable of Steel Shooting

Shooting steel targets is one of the most rewarding ways to train. Whether you're practicing for competition, improving your accuracy, or just enjoying time at the range, nothing beats the instant feedback of hearing that satisfying ring of a well-placed shot. But as fun and functional as steel targets are, they come with serious responsibilities. At Striqpoint, we believe that safety is not just a best practice—it’s the foundation of everything we build.

One of the most important principles in steel target shooting is material selection. Not all steel is suitable for firearm use. Using mild or low-grade steel can result in deformation, dangerous fragmentation, and unpredictable ricochets. This is why Striqpoint exclusively uses premium AR500 steel—a hardened steel alloy specifically engineered to withstand repeated bullet impacts without significant pitting or damage. Every one of our gongs and targets is precision-cut from AR500 and carefully inspected to ensure consistency, strength, and shooter safety. If you’re unfamiliar with what makes AR500 the industry standard, visit our FAQ's where we explain the material properties and why it matters for safe shooting.

Equally essential to safety is how the target is positioned. A steel plate that faces the shooter flat-on can create a severe risk of splatter or ricochet. The correct method is to mount the target at a slight forward angle—usually between 10 and 20 degrees—so that any bullet fragments are deflected safely downward into the ground. This is why Striqpoint’s mounting systems are designed not just for stability, but to naturally tilt targets forward for improved fragment control. A properly angled target doesn’t just enhance safety; it also extends the usable life of the steel by distributing impact more evenly across the surface.

Distance is another non-negotiable. Different calibers generate vastly different forces, and safe shooting distances must be adjusted accordingly. Pistol calibers such as 9mm or .45 ACP can typically be shot safely at a minimum of 10 to 15 yards, while rifle rounds like .223 or .308 require at least 100 yards of separation to minimize the risk of dangerous back-splatter. These minimums should never be compromised. Over time, steel targets used too closely or with inappropriate calibers can become warped or cratered, creating irregular surfaces that increase the likelihood of bullet fragmentation returning toward the shooter. We strongly encourage all shooters to review Striqpoint’s Safety Policy before use, which outlines these minimum distances in more detail along with caliber-specific recommendations.

Surface condition also plays a critical role in shooting safety. A steel target should always present a flat, smooth surface to the shooter. Once the surface begins to pit, chip, or warp from repeated use—or from impacts with steel-core or armor-piercing rounds—it should be removed from service. Damaged targets can send fragments in erratic directions, sometimes even straight back. That’s why we advise our customers to regularly inspect their targets and hardware for any signs of excessive wear or compromise. At Striqpoint, we laser-cut our gongs to ensure clean edges and smooth surfaces, and we use only trusted materials to maintain a uniform hardness across every product.

In addition to proper distance, angle, and material, we also urge shooters to use the right ammunition. Lead-core bullets are always preferred when shooting steel. Avoid using bi-metal, steel-core, or armor-piercing ammunition, all of which can severely damage even AR500 targets and dramatically increase ricochet risk. If you’re not sure what types of ammo are safe for your Striqpoint target, our FAQ section covers this topic in depth.

Finally, a word on protection: safety gear is essential. No matter how confident or experienced you are, always wear eye protection that meets ANSI Z87.1 standards and quality ear protection when shooting any kind of steel target. Long sleeves and gloves can add another layer of safety, especially during long sessions or in unpredictable range environments.

At Striqpoint, we’re committed to building more than just targets—we’re building a safer, smarter shooting experience. That’s why safety is built into the very design of our products, from our durable AR500 gongs to our engineered mounting systems. As a new but serious name in the steel shooting market, we want to earn your trust not just through quality, but through transparency and accountability.

If you’re just getting started or want to make sure you're using your equipment as safely as possible, we encourage you to explore our Safety Policy, and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions through our FAQ or contact page. Responsible shooting isn’t just the right way to enjoy this sport—it’s the only way.
